Satellite Tagged Seals

Declines in ground fish stocks have intensified concerns regarding the predatory impact of seals on these resources and possible global implications. Identifying the relationship that exists between the seasonal visitors and our resident animals is of prime importance. Determining the function that the New England habitat plays in harp and hooded seals life history is vital, so researchers have satellite tagged healthy wild caught seals along the coast of Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
We hope to analyze these movement patterns relative to sea surface temperature, chlorophyll-a concentrations, and bathymetry. Additionally, this information can be useful to understand the habitat constraints as well to compare these movements to the rehabilitated seals.
